‘4 Gateways’ Entrances to Nature Reserves.

2008
Locations; Mirfield, Thornhill Lees and Huddersfield
Commissioner; Countryside unit, Kirklees Council
Material; Steel

In late 2006 a commission was undertaken to create a series of entrance features for nature reserves across the Kirklees area. As each of the 4 sites was accessible to the public, a process of consultation was undertaken with local groups and schools. Talking to local history groups gave the scheme a firm grounding in the area’s heritage, whilst design sessions with school children gave the project energy, fun and relevance.

This approach led to some of the features having an almost cartoon like appearance, without being incongruous in their natural surroundings.

The pieces affirmed the local nicknames given to the reserves over their formal names, Sparrow Woods in Thornhill is known as ‘Spuggy Woods’, and Gledholdt Woods is referred to as ‘TP Woods’. These two features were made from galvanised steel sub structures with 4” thick solid oak panels attached. The Lady of the woods was derived from designs by local school children in Lady Wood, Mirfield, and is made from untreated mild steel- a robust material left to season in its woodland setting.
