As part of a scheme to develop their grounds, the local primary school commissioned a ‘sculpture tree’. The feature would act as a central focus to the sensory zone of their outside learning area. Preliminary design work with Y2 and Y4 gave rise to lots of colourful and fun suggestions for a central sculpture with various musical attachments. The final design was an amalgamation of the input of many pupils, and they each had an opportunity to help build and construct the finished work. The tree contains, a xylophone, wind chimes, guitar strings and a trumpet, although none are loud enough to disturb the nearby wildlife area, which was enhanced with the construction of several ‘bug hotels’. The whole outdoor space now functions as a multi purpose outdoor classroom.
