Commissioned by Creative Partnerships Bolsover, Ashfield and Mansfield, A project was developed with staff to create a working recycling zone within the outdoor area allocated to the school’s foundation unit. It was key that the young children witnessed the process of environmental change, and so time was spent based in the classroom, showing children fixtures, fittings and materials that were to be used in the building of the space. Once a final design for the recycling zone had been arrived at, the process was delivered so children could be involved in the construction and making of the space. Tools and techniques were used that were not only safe, but similar to the educational resources the children were familiar with in their classroom. This gave an understanding of a real working process, and a strong sense of ownership over the final space. The area is a place where objects can be gathered and processed for recycling, paper and card weighed out (linking with numeracy), cans crushed and collected, and items like bottle tops gathered to be used in art projects. The scheme was instrumental in the school being awarded an ‘Eco Schools’ green flag award in summer 2008.
