In 2005 an Arts Council award resulted in the creation of a body of personal sculpture work. One of the pieces was a maquette for ‘starting point’. The 3ft high maquette made from Wath stone, was featured in several exhibitions in Yorkshire and caught the eye of centre manager of Swinton Lock Activity Centre, Ruth Midgeley.
A larger version was commissioned to act as an entrance feature to the centre, a former British Waterways canal side depot. The sculpture was carved from a 3.5 ton block of Cadeby limestone, with the star detail made from reclaimed grit stone. The title ‘Starting Point’, refers to the process of research and enquiry when making a piece of work, described in the steps of the sculpture. The star form refers to the flashpoint of realisation - the penny dropping when an idea comes into focus in the minds eye.
"We commissioned Lewis with the brief to create an innovative piece of sculpture to represent the activities we undertake at the centre.Lewis involved us fully in the creative process from initial drawings right through to final installation.
A truly inclusive process as everyone witnessed and enjoyed viewing the artistic journey from raw lump of rock to the final sculpture."
