The concept for the space was arrived at when the school worked with an architect and a performing arts group. The school wanted a modular and changeable role play space, where a backdrop provided stimulus for children to create and perform their own stories. Each year group was allocated a topic from their curriculum, which gave 5 themes for the panels. Each of these themes made four panels, making 20 interchangeable panels in all. The children designed the panels using collage materials that reflected the materials and colours to be used in the final panels.
Specific playground grade plastic sheeting was used to create the panels, along with aluminium and timber to give varying colour and texture. The Backdrop can be built up by varying the themes. A house sit in the jungle canopy, a castle floating in outer space, and cars and towns underwater. The panels slot together into recessed treated timber posts. Ceramic tiles made by nursery children act as edging to the role play area, which is covered with ‘wetpour’ safety surface.
“ We have developed a long and sustainable relationship with Lewis. The areas he has built lend themselves to cross- curricular work as well as directed and free play. I have recommended Lewis to schools in the past and have no hesitation in doing so in the future”
